Hillsboro’s fire fighters will h a v e charge of the Fourth of July celebration this year and they have outlined a pro- gram th a t augurs well for continuation of this traditional event. The firem en have the responsibility fo r carrying on with the celebration. which has been ably and sue- cessfully operated for many years by the cham ber of commerce. They are going into the work with a determ ination to give the county a cele- bration th a t will be appreciated, particu larly, as a homecoming event and as a goodwill affair. T heir program won the hearty approval of the Fourth of July commission, which made a careful study of the celebration. Let’s all get in and give the boys the kind of co-operation they have been giv ing us in fire fighting for so many years. Frank W. Connell In the untim ely death of F rank W. Connell, prom inent dairym an and stock breeder, the community has lost one of its most outstanding and w orthw hile native sons. F ra n k Connell was a good citizen and was universally liked. He gave freely of his time and service in agricultural, civic and church affairs. All who knew him will join in expressing their sym pathies and regrets to the family. The attendance of friends th a t filled the M ethodist church to overflow ing at the funeral from every section of the county and from a distance clearly a t tested to the standing of the deceased as neighbor and citizen. A ttitude of SERA w orkers as expressed in report on wages and other conditions as given in the Argus last week by a w orkers’ committee is gratifying. In this they express them selves as being satisfied th a t everything possible is being done for their w eiiare by the local comm ittee. The members tee in their contacts men and in thi a good spirit of co-operation. May soon come when the need fo r present methods of relief have passed and th a t all now on relief rolls will have opportu nities for productive work th at will bring them a more abundant life. John J. Kuratli John J. Kuratli, who died at Bethany at the age of 92. m ade a m ark on the a f fairs of this county as a sterling citizen in his 60 years of residence here and ne leaves hundreds of friends and a fine fam ily to mourn his loss. The Short Cut Road Short cut roads to the beach, one by way of the Wilson river and th e other over the W olf creek route, have been des ignated now for a num ber of years. They would give to half the sta te ’s population ready access to the beaches th a t others further south have enjoyed for years. Witn the allotm ent of federal funds for road work the revised highway commission should give favorable consideration to im mediate completion of these beach roads. The people of northw est Oregon have prayed and worked for a short cut for years. May we realize our hopes soon. Give a Pat on the Back It isS alwaYsH easy to criticize those in office and policies, but it seems to us much more logical to give officials op portunity to work out their program and to co-operate with them in bringing suc cess to their endeavors. It is the patriotic thing to do. When we elect leaders they are entitled to support not to bulldozing and heaps of criticism before they have actually had an opportunity to succeed in their efforts. A pat on the btack will help a lot more often than one may realize. T hreat of “tax secession” is what m ight be expected from the power mad Louisiana Kingfish. He is making all kinds of rash rem arks in his attem pts to dis- credit the Roosevelt administration. His subservient legislature and henchmen in Louisiana may bow to him and his diet"- t r t r i n l w n v a h u t h e w ill n e i .. » «■ 't i . to n a l ways, tut he Will not get far Wltn his seccession threats as that subject was thoroughly settled in the world’s greatest j . . i i ------------------- ----- civil w ar m any --------- years ago. W hy Mrs. W alter Pierce should want to continue on the board of higher educa tion when she can be present at so few m eetings of th a t group is hard to under stand. Because of her absence in W ash ington w ith Congressm an Pierce, where she acts as his secretary, she is seldom present at a board session. It seems logical th a t G overnor M artin should suggest that she sfep out.
